Messe München GmbH – the first trade fair company awarded an energy efficiency certificate by TÜV SÜD
Messe München GmbH (MMG) is the first trade fair company to be awarded the TÜV SÜD “Energy Efficient Enterprise“ certificate. The energy experts’ certificate confirms that the trade fair group uses state-of-the-art technology and continuously strives to improve its energy consumption. The certificate again emphasizes that Messe München is a trailblazer in environmental and climate protection.
As one of the leading trade fair groups in Germany, Messe München (MMG) also acts as a trailblazer in environmental and climate protection. “We took these aspects into consideration right from the outset in the planning, construction and operation of the New Munich Trade Fair Centre“, said Manfred Wutzlhofer, Chairman and CEO of Messe München GmbH, at the certificate award ceremony in Munich. Energy efficiency at Messe München extends from the operation of a combined heating and power station to extensive energy efficiency measures regarding building automation and light systems and the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roofs of the trade fair halls. “We strive to use the latest state-of-the-art technology to optimize our energy consumption and CO2 emissions from the perspectives of ecology, technology and cost-efficiency”, explains Wutzlhofer.
Extensive energy audit
TÜV SÜD carried out a detailed audit to assess energy use at MMG. This audit determined actual energy use at the Munich trade fair centre and identified available opportunities for energy-saving. “The energy audit revealed that Messe München GmbH fulfils its role as a trailblazer and can rightly refer to itself as an “energy efficient enterprise“ in the future“, explains DrManfred Bayerlein, Member of the Board of Management of TÜV SÜD AG. Key criteria for successful certification were that Messe München GmbH had already taken great efforts to improve its energy efficiency and that the additional opportunities for energy saving identified in the audit were under ten per cent. “In their report, our auditors particularly emphasized the commitment of technical staff to the optimization of energy efficiency and the exemplary way in which top management supported the implementation of relevant energy efficiency measures at MMG“, said DrBayerlein. The technical staff has continuously endeavoured to optimize installations and their operation and to use new, energy-efficient methods and technologies. Opportunities for improvement identified by TÜV SÜD experts were limited to the energy consumption at the trade fair company’s central office and to sensitizing non-technical employees to further optimization of energy efficiency.
Uncovering opportunities for energy saving
TÜV SÜD developed the “Energy Efficient Enterprise“ certificate on the basis of its extensive experience in energy consultancy and energy and material flow analysis (EMFA) In contrast to the procedures applied so far, the assessment of energy efficiency also includes emission potential. During the course of the assessment, TÜV SÜD experts analyze both technical and economic feasibility and the readiness of both management and employees to implement measures. “Certification helps our clients to uncover possible energy savings“, says Dr Bayerlein. “Companies may also use our certificate to verify that they manage their energy resources responsibly.“
For Messe München GmbH (MMG), the “Energy Efficient Enterprise“ certificate is further confirmation that the company has been on the right track so far in its environmental and climate protection – from environmental impact assessment during the planning and construction of the New Munich Trade Fair Centre or the development of an innovative energy scheme for the supply of electricity, heat and air-conditioning in ongoing operation to waste avoidance, separation and recycling and, last but not least, targeted seepage of rain water on the grounds of the New Trade Fair Centre. “We will consistently continue along this route“, emphasized Chairman and CEO of MMG Wutzlhofer. “We regard the opportunities of improvement identified by TÜV SÜD as valuable assistance in further optimizing the energy efficiency, and thus the environmental and climate friendliness, of our company.“
