VER projects and programmes
Validation, Verification and Certification of VER projects and programmes
In addition to the project-based mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol (JI and CDM) a market for so-called VER (Verified Emissions Reduction) projects is currently emerging. These projects are realised in line with the rules applicable to CDM or JI projects, but are not registered with the UN – either for cost or time reasons.
Such projects may also form part of a climate change programme aimed at ensuring carbon offset and neutrality for conferences and sports events.
The certificates generated are expected to be compatible with other emissions trading schemes outside the Kyoto Protocol.
To ensure reliability and transparency, the projects and programmes are assessed by third-party certification organisations.
TÜV SÜD and its Carbon Management Services unit have been assessing climate change projects since 2000. Having assessed hundreds of projects, TÜV SÜD is one of the market leaders in third-party validation and verification of climate change measures. Regarding validation and verification of CDM and JI projects, we have been accredited for all fields of technology by UNFCCC. Further information about our accreditation status is available at the United Nations‘ website at: www.unfccc.int
