Headquartered in Munich, Germany, the technical service corporation is more than a mere testing and inspection organization. In doing so, they focus on their core competencies of Consulting, Testing, Certification and Training. 14,000 staff proactively optimize technology, systems and expertise at over 600 locations in Europe, America and Asia.

TÜV SÜD services provided by the INDUSTRY business segment range from plant engineering to implementing international climate-change projects or testing sports equipment to ensure its safe functioning in compliance with the standard; experts in the MOBILITY business segment are responsible for tasks from roadworthiness and exhaust emission testing of cars and motorbikes to supporting vehicle manufacturers in gaining worldwide approval of new developments; the PEOPLE business segment supports companies with a variety of services from occupational health and safety to management system certification. Clients benefit from interdisciplinary one-stop solutions and from TÜV SÜD’s more than 140 years of experience.

In 2008, TÜV SÜD increased its consolidated sales almost EUR 1.4 billion.

Our background

From technical inspectorate, committed to the minimization of technical risks, to service provider.
Established 140 years ago by boiler operators as a private-sector regulatory body with the business objective of "protecting man, the environment and property against the adverse effects of technology" in the industrial centers of the German Länder Baden, Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse and Saxony (e.g. in Bavaria under the name of "Bayerischer Dampfkessel Revisions Verein" (Bavarian Boiler Inspection Association)).

Gradual expansion of areas of activity parallel to technological progress (among others, electrical power, motor vehicles, fire safety, power station engineering, passenger lifts, ropeways, nuclear power stations, environmental protection, product safety, management systems).
Gradual internationalization within the EU, in the USA and in the Far East.

Important milestones in recent years

• 1996 Merger of TÜV Bayern Sachsen and TÜV Südwest to form TÜV Süddeutschland 
• 1999 Integration of the activities of TÜV Hessen GmbH and TÜH Staatliche Technische Überwachung Hessen in TÜV Technische Überwachung Hessen GmbH (majority shareholder:
  TÜV SÜD AG)
• 2003 TÜV Hanse (majority shareholder: TÜV Auto Service GmbH, TÜV SÜD Gruppe) established
• 2005 TÜV Chemie Service established
• 2006 Expansion of services in Asia and Northern America through the acquisition of Singapore-based PSB Group and US inspection company PetroChem
• 2008 Initial and periodic inspection of plants and installations now offered throughout Germany
• 2009 Launch of Turkey-wide vehicle inspection by TÜVTURK, a joint venture of TÜV SÜD and two Turkish partner companies
